Brunswick Laboratories Inks Innovative TCM Partnerships in China

Brunswick Laboratories, the leading commercial laboratory specializing in the science of antioxidants and oxidative stress, has announced the establishment of exclusive research collaborations with two Chinese government institutions involved in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Brunswick Labs, located in Norton, MA, USA, will work with the National Laboratory of TCM Formulation in Nanchang, and the National Laboratory of TCM Standardizations in Shanghai.

Jim Nichols, President and CEO at Brunswick Laboratories, says that establishing links to prominent Chinese scientific and government institutions is vital to success there. “It is important to create relationships in China built on mutual benefit and cooperation. With these agreements, Brunswick Labs achieves the objectives of adding value to Chinese products and services in global markets and to our customers.”

Brunswick Labs will work with the Chinese laboratories in two areas. First, it will conduct R&D to develop novel compounds and formulations derived from TCM. This will include chemical characterization, mechanisms of action, condition-specific formulations, and novel delivery systems. The National Lab of TCM Formulation offers access to an unmatched repository of TCM knowledge. Through this partnership, Brunswick Labs will be able to offer value-added, proprietary formulation and product development services to its customers competing in global markets where demand for novel alternative health products is growing. Professor Ming Yang, Director of National Laboratory of TCM Formulations in Nanchang, expressed excitement about the collaboration. “We are thrilled that Brunswick Labs will help us implement modern laboratory management and U.S. GLP standards”.

Second, Brunswick Labs will develop world-class quality assurance standards for natural products sourced in China and delivered globally. China has become the leading supplier of natural ingredients to nutraceutical markets worldwide. With this growth comes a need to improve quality control across a range of product specifications. By providing authoritative GLPs and standards for TCM formulations, Brunswick Labs and the National Lab for Standardizations will improve global market value for TCM products from China.

Professor Zheng-tao Wang, director of the National Laboratory of TCM Standardizations in Shanghai also hails the collaboration with BL. “Brunswick Labs will help our laboratory discover novel biomarkers of TCM based on modern theory of antioxidants and oxidative stress. This will help us stay at the front edge of TCM research and improve the value of TCM products worldwide.”

This collaboration gives Brunswick Labs a unique ability to provide innovative, value-added services to companies seeking novel TCM products. Brunswick Labs vice president, Dr. Boxin Ou, adds, “Coupled with our expanding clinical trial capabilities in China, we can now provide our clients break-through product development, from discovery research to in vivo outcomes in human health.”
