Brunswick Labs is offering bioassay guided isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from natural ingredients. The new service integrates the processes of separation of compounds in a natural ingredient, using combiflash chromatographic technique. Results are obtained from various biological assays, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and more. The process begins with testing an ingredient to confirm its activity, followed by crude fractionation of the compounds in the matrix and testing the crude fractions (Fig. 1). Further fractionation is carried out by cherry picking the fractions that are determined to be active. The process of fractionation and biological testing is repeated until a certain level of bioactivity in a fraction is reached. Structural identification of the bioactive compounds then follows by using a high resolution LC/MS or LC/NMR system. This approach will ultimately lead to the discovery and identification of bioactive compounds present in a crude extract. The customer is provided with an authentic fingerprint for product quality control and possible new botanic drug candidates. Brunswick Labs has successfully applied this technique to study cranberry, coffee, bitter melon, mulberry, spinach, and other botanical samples.
