Press Releases

Wareham, MA - Mar 5, 2004

We are excited to offer our improved COX-1 and COX-2 assays (COX-1/2). This service represents an important breakthrough in the analytical testing of anti-inflammatory activity for the natural products industry.

A recent issue of Time magazine calls inflammation "The Secret Killer," and implicates it in heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer and other diseases.

COX-1/2 inhibition analysis is a mainstay in the testing arsenal of pharmacologic therapies for inflammation. As a result, there is a solid body of evidence about the effects of COX-1/2 inhibition on inflammation and pain associated with it. However, until now, there has not been an efficient way to test the anti-inflammatory activity of natural products.

Nutraceuticals have become an important non-pharmacologic therapy for relief of inflammation and pain related to it. Glucosamine products alone are an $800 million market, and numerous other prominent natural products lay claim to potent anti-inflammatory properties. In a recent article in Nutritional Outlook, Kristine Clark, PhD, RD, Director of Sports Nutrition at Penn State, ".Supplements should be considered an ideal delivery system for ingredients that appear to decrease joint pain and stiffness." This is true for other sources of inflammatory distress as well.

Our new COX-1/2 service quantitates anti-inflammatory activity and calculates a ratio that measures the selectivity of COX-2 inhibition. This helps predict the likelihood of gastric side effects; and the natural lack of toxicity is a great advantage natural products hold over pharmaceutical drugs. Our COX-1/2 assays are based on an improved oxygraph method and use IC50 as a unit of measure.

These are in vitro assays and do not measure activity in vivo. Bioavailability in the body depends upon a variety of factors that are not addressed by these assays. However, products that claim to be effective at COX inhibition in the body ought to demonstrate a similar activity in our assays.

So, call, email, or visit our website.but one way or another, order our new and unique COX-1/2 inhibition assays for your fine products today!
